LEARN TO FLY
PRIVATE PILOTS LICENCE (PPL)
The Majority of pilots in New Zealand and Australia hold Private
Pilots Licences. A Private Pilots Licence (PPL) allows you to fly an
aircraft acting as “Pilot in Command” for private purposes only. i.e
You may take passengers but you may not accept any form of
remuneration for your services.
A PPL is made up of several parts, both practical (flight training)
and written (theory).
Before you can be issued with a PPL, there are a few legal
requirements that must be met.
Some of these are as follows:
-
You must be at least 17 years of age
-
You must have accrued at least 50 hours of flight time, of which at
least 15 hours must be pilot in command (solo) time
-
You must hold a Class 2 medical certificate or higher
Obviously, obtaining a medical certificate is an important step
which should be achieved before a large investment is made in flying
lessons. For information on how a medical certificate can be
obtained in Port Vila, please refer to our contact page.
You can start flying lessons at any age, but to fly solo you must be
at least 16 years old. Most students will fly solo within their
first 10-15 hours of flight training, but note that this is an
average only and will depend on a number of factors.
The approximate cost breakdown for a PPL Licence can be found below.

Private Pilots Licence (PPL) Practical Cost Breakdown
Flight Training
The Flight training (practical) aspect of the Private Pilots Licence
(PPL) Syllabus is carried out in our 4-seat Cessna 172 aircraft.
Your first 10-15 hours will include intense dual instruction, after
which time, the average student will be ready to take their “first
solo” flight. This is a huge step in a young pilot’s career. For a
student to go “solo” they must be at least 16 years of age and have
been issued with a Class 2 Aviation Medical. (For information on how
this medical can be obtained, please visit our contacts page or
contact the Vanuatu Civil Aviation Authority Tel: 23301).
The minimum legal requirement for the issue of a PPL is 50 hours of
total flight time, including at least 15 hours of Pilot in Command
(solo) flight time. It is acknowledged however that the average
student will take in the vicinity of 70 hours total flight time
inclusive of the pilot in command requirement before the PPL
standard will be achieved. This is of course assuming that the
student has a good understanding and grasping of the lessons that
have been undertaken
The prices below are based on this assumption.

examination.

Flight Test
For the issue of a PPL, there is a requirement to complete a Flight
Test with a flight examiner.
During this flight test (similar in principle to a driving test),
the candidate is to demonstrate competency in all normal, non-normal
and emergency procedures in the air, as well as a section of
groundwork to be completed and tested before and after the flight.
After this test has been successfully completed, a PPL will be
issued. The fee for the issue of the PPL licence is as follows:
|
1.5 hours Cessna 172 @ 23,000 VT an hour |
34,500 VT |
|
CAAV Issue Fee |
4,000 VT |
TOTAL 2,074,550 VT
Please note that these figures are an estimate only and the actual
cost and time depends on the ability of the candidate and may be
more or less than the figure quoted. Prices are effective October
2005 and are subject to change without notice.
